Roots of Empathy
Preventing bullying and aggression while nurturing positive mental health for children of military families
Roots of Empathy’s evidence-based program places volunteer parents and their young child into classrooms on a weekly basis. Students then observe the baby’s development and emotions, and over time learn how to identify and express their own feelings to nurture positive mental health. This is extremely important as many children have a difficult time expressing their emotions and do not have the tools to properly manage them.
In partnership with True Patriot Love, Military Family Resource Centres and selected schools across Canada, Roots of Empathy will deliver it’s year-long, evidence based classroom programs to schools with high populations of children from military families. The Roots of Empathy program increases empathy and creates more supportive learning environments for children of military families and their peers, resulting in improved mental health and well-being for military children and their families.
Program location: P.E.I, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia
I am grateful to the True Patriot Love Foundation for providing me with the opportunity to be trained as a Roots of Empathy Instructor. It is a privilege to be part of a program that teaches children to have empathy towards one another.
It is exciting to watch the students learn each week especially during family visits where they observe how their Roots of Empathy baby has grown and developed and the ways in which his mother cares for him. Further, it is gratifying to be able to engage one of our military families on base in a program like Roots of Empathy which supports them in building positive relationships within their community.
